c'mon vogue

if you've read march vogue, then you probably read the article about the new haircut for the "new york girl".

according to plum sykes,
"you couldn’t have failed to notice the new, swingy, collarbone–grazing, not–long–not–short hair that everyone from -gwyneth paltrow to natalia vodianova and kate moss has adopted."
i'm sort of toying with the idea of chopping off my locks for summer...but i'm super attached to my hair! it's long, with layers and sideswept bangs. (the bangs dilemma is whole other issue - are they in? are they out? i have no idea.) not that i am a total voguetron - and honestly, who can afford to be these days? - but if my hair makes me look like an NY1 anchorwoman....no, thanks.
i'm due for a haircut soon, but i'll let it marinate. thoughts?

quote of the day

"the irony of commitment is that it's deeply liberating - in work, in play, in love. the act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. to commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life."

la gamine

i chose the name for the blog because a) i like the way it sounds b) it was available and c) i secretly aspire to be one.

from wikipedia:

"gamine is a french word, the feminine form of gamin, originally meaning urchin, waif, or playful, naughty child. the word was used in english from about the mid 19th century, but in the 20th century, came to be applied in its more modern sense of a slim, often boyish, wide-eyed young woman who is, or is perceived to be, mischievous, teasing or sexually appealing."

quote of the day

on my blog:
"as if you need another creative outlet." - my boyfriend

hello!

my name is alexandra, and i'm writing to you from center of the universe (manhattan).

when i thought about writing a blog, i got really nervous about it, because i'm not an absolute obsessive about anything that seems blog-worthy. i don't know all the best restaurants in the city, or read poltico.com endlessly, or memorize the names of all the models at fashion week, etc. (to those of you who do - you're incredible.) i just sort of dabble very well.
then, i realized, that's the story with most of the people i know, too. and i love them.
i also realized that with these people, i have a pattern. it goes like this:
1) i hear/see/think up something interesting. on average, about 3 per week.
2) i tell everyone i know.
3) i end up telling them twice. or three times.
so, i figured that having a blog would be a way to tell the entire WORLD my interesting stories, and save the people in my life from having to tell me that they heard it already.

in this blog, i plan on including all the things that i like, and think others might enjoy, too. hopefully the wonderful people in my life will guestblog (aka boyfriend, besties, teachers, my mom and dad, brother, sister, whoever.)

i hope you like it. XX
